An infinitely tender debut novel… – Républicain Lorrain
Nanou, a seven-year-old girl, is delighted by the brand new blue diary Aunt Alice has gifted her. She pours her heart out and writes about the things that make her sad and the things that make her happy. She suffers from a disease she can barely pronounce – e-c-c-h-y-m-o-s-i-s – but soon figures out how to spell using her “diskionary”. As doctors toss medical jargon over her head, she listens attentively and absorbs words, for she likes “writing letters that become words afterwards”.
She has Toutoune, a shabby teddy bear, and her older sister, Valentine, for company. There is also the ever-helpful Aunt Alice and her favourite nurse, Marie. Though Nanou’s illness keeps her away from school, it does not keep her from becoming an acute observer of life and of herself. From a vantage point of “three feet four inches”, she shares her innermost thoughts and feelings in a candid and touching manner. Gripping in its simplicity, her diary is even more endearing with all its spelling mistakes and grammatical errors!
“Strong, deceptively light, full of poetry. Deeply moving.” – Questions de femmes
